Another trouble appears when connecting your POP3 account to BlackBerry Internet Service. This happens when you try to connect outlook via SMTP and POP3, but the BlackBerry Internet Service refuses to recognize the settings.
You can use these steps in connecting POP3 Account to your BIS. Now, assuming that ports are correctly forwarded from your firewall, which would seem to be the case if you've connected with a POP3/IMAP mail client external to your network, then BIS shouldn't know or care that you are splitting the jobs amongst multiple servers.
Better you would try setting up the account again in BIS. This time, however, enter the password incorrectly on purpose. This will take you to another config screen so that you can fine-tune how BIS is trying to connect to your account. Check that it's using IMAP (and is not, for example, trying to pick up your OWA account).
